Coding is Important

The further I get into my Cybersecurity journey, the more I have come to realize that coding is a much more significant part of pentesting than I was led to believe. My current degree program has no actual courses that teach coding at all. I took a scripting class, but the class was mainly focused on using Ansible on Red Hat to perform admin tasks on multiple servers and endpoints. Although that was valuable information, it didn’t give me the tools I needed to write my own BASH scripts or manipulate my own tools.

I know that there are excellent sites like Github and StackOverflow in this day and age that have endless repositories and libraries that we can borrow and use. Still, every box is unique, and every challenge requires a specific set of tools to complete. Being able to write or edit scripts on the fly and understand and read source code is invaluable. Because of this, I have decided to learn how to code, at least on a fundamental level. I purchased the 2022 Complete Python Bootcamp From Zero to Hero in Python course by Jose Portilla on Udemy.com.

I have been working through it for about 3 days now, and it is really well produced and has a lot of fantastic resources. I have already seen the value in working with .ipynb files and IDEs. I am very excited for this journey. I know I won’t become a pro using one course, but I am hoping to at least be able to read code and have the ability to write some simple scripts. I also want to make an effort to learn how to script using BASH as well, but from what I understand, learning Python is a perfect starter language. I will post updates and let you know how much I have learned as I work through it.

Feel free to email me if you have any ideas or suggestions!

Happy New Year!
